HI All,
I read up WPD samples provided in WinDDK, build them and install them. Let say I want to change them from root enumerated to usb enumerated so that they will respond to device being plugged in/out, what are the things I should look at?
Is it something to do with IDriverEntry::AddDevice()?
Thank you very much.

- You change the hwid you match against in the inf from root.. to usb.. Since this also a umdf driver you will need to specify that you want to use winusb. Look at the umdf fx2 sample inf for that stuff

Thanks for your reply.
If I want to keep the WPD as root enumerated device driver, but whether it is enabled or disabled is determined by whether the usb thumbdrive is plugged in/out. is this possible? Do I have to create bus driver for this scenario?or do I simply register to listen to device arrival event?
Thank you - new update/question..
I tried installing OSF fx2 usb driver (sample in WinDDK). As expected, since there is no OSR device, in Device manager, the status is that the device can not start. However, when I look at the properties/details/enumerator, it is listed as Root, instead of USB. is it normal? - How did you install the driver?

I use devcon install - Devcon install creates a root enumerated device, devcon update installs the driver on an existing device. Basically, you need the hw

I see.
So it is possible for me to have a WPD driver that is root enumerated but it listens to my thumbdrive device arrival and removal? What are possible things that I need to look for in that case if it is possible?
I noticed my Nokia phone N96. When the phone is plugged in, the root enumerated WPD is enabled and when the phone is plugged out, the root enumerated wpd is disabled. - The root enumerated wpd device stack that is coming and going is a bit of black magic voo doo .. there is a windows service that is making that appear and disappear. I don't think this is root enumerated though, it is enumerated by umbus (it's compatible id is wpdbusenumfs). This actually happens for any removable media. I just plugged in a usb thumb drive and got the same wpd stack enumerated by umbus. I also got wpd devices for usb flash card reader. Either your phone is exposing mass storage or WPD directly (don't know, but viewing by connection in device manager and looking at the parent and grandparent will tell you).
Do you want your usb thumbdrive to still look like a mass storage device to the OS after your driver is installed and done? If no, you can install your driver over usbstor in your INF by matching against USBClass_08 and then you can party all you want.

It seems that my phone behave differently..it is enumerated under root. I follow ur instruction and open device manager and view by connection. It is shown in the pics below:

Actually I just want my WPD to be notified when my USB thumb drive is plugged in so that the WPD driver is enabled and when the thumb drive is plugged out, the WPD driver is disabled.
So I tried installing the WPDHelloworld sample driver from WinDDK with the INF file modified accordingly (following the INF from OSR fx2 driver sample to add WinUSB) and also. I installed the driver over my thumbdrive driver. My thumbdrive is now shown in Device Manager under Portable devices, instead of Disk Drives. Although it has some yellow sign and error code 31 (Device can not start because windows can not load the driver for this device).
my first target is just when I plug in my thumbdrive, the WPD icon will appear on My Computer. Because of the error code 31, It did not appear on My Computer.
